Time to start working on another mission! Again, we have a playable layout, so it's time to dress it up. This time, I'm going to try to turn this: into something with a vibe like these: I'm thinking dark, damp, gloomy, murky... y'know, swampy :-) Step one: make a printout, sit outside, and doodle! The weather is great, so that's a good excuse to go outside for a bit. Of course, 15 minutes later I get bored and decide it's time to go back to the computer...
Michiel here, with some new screenshots! Remember this one from a while ago? It was appropriately labeled "this is not a victory condition". Now, though, you get another chance to blow everything up! Destroy the red operation retrieving mysterious artifacts from this glacier covered vault and claim its riches for yourself... And then pop it open and discover what it holds! Apparently, though, it mostly holds large amounts of kaboom :) This was a really fun one to make. At first, we intended to just show a bit of dialogue, and then move on to the next mission. I'm not sure which of us suggested the crater (but it was probably me) and in the space of an evening, we decided we couldn't resist and had to put it in. The trick is we don't actually modify the terrain at all - at least not during the game. We just created a copy, which we modified to look like the crater above. Then, it's a matter of adding particle effects (smoke, flame), ripping up the trees (either turning off the foliage or just turning them upside down to just leave stumps :) Then, hidden by a flash and some smoke, we just move the camera over and when the smoke clears, you're looking at the fruits of your labour :) The mission is not available for you to play yet, but there's plenty of other missions you can try!
And then it goes OM NOM NOM and then your buildings go *poof* So yeah, that's just a quick preview of the next mission we're working on: take out the green blobbies' new secret weapon, a giant mechanical worm that'll eat everything. As usual, it's mostly particle effects... I know one trick and I am going to milk it for all its worth ;-) The "worm sign" is just two particle systems: one spraying sand upwards, the other leaving the dust trail behind. Then, we have a simple model that pokes up through the ground and noms a building. That's it for now! We still need to finish the previous mission, but we tend to go back and forth between missions if we feel like it. Next up is probably some sound effects and some more detail work, like rocks, cacti, etc. Stay tuned for more Powargrid! Happy hacking,
